The ONS then generated average scores for different areas of the country.

The average happiness figure for the UK was 7.4, with Mid and East Antrim in Northern Ireland smiling at the head of the pack at 8.21.

The Annual Population Survey looked at three other areas of well-being in addition to happiness: life satisfaction, how worthwhile you feel the things you do are and anxiety.

Horsham again scored highly for life satisfaction - 8.14 out of ten against a national average of 7.6, and for the worthwhile category (8.23 with a UK average of 7.8).
