WORTHING HAVE THINGS TO WORK ON

WORTHING Rugby Club are up to third in the table, but left Old Colfeians on Saturday with things to work on following a disappointing second half performance.

All the scoring was in the first period, as Worthing, playing against a strong wind and heavy rain, ran in four converted tries after falling behind to an early penalty.

Colfeians started the brighter as Worthing struggled for the opening 10 minutes and went 3-0 behind.

But, two Jamie Stewart-McDonald tries and one each from Ben Dudley and Rowan O'Gorman, all converted by Ben Coulson, gave Worthing a 28-3 lead going into half-time.

Worthing never got into their stride in the second half as Ben McGowan and Simon Alcott were both sinbinned. This left Worthing with just 13 men for a 12 minute spell in which they just held out, thanks to two last ditch tackles near the try-line.

Worthing scrum-half Ben Coulson said: "We won the toss and elected to battle against the wind first, just to get it out of the way. They started well but we played reasonable rugby after the first 10 minutes, and up to 10 minutes into the second half.

"After that we seemed to lose a bit of discipline, shape, and focus.

"We were holding on a little bit towards the end, but it was a game where once a team gets the momentum going, it's nearly impossible to stop it.

"In the end it's another two points though, and we have things that we can build on."

League leaders Richmond visit Worthing on Saturday. They have played and won four so far.

Skipper Jody Levett and Gavin Stephens should be back available for Saturday's match.
