WHY WOODSIDE'S CHANGED ITS NAME

WORTHING FC president Morty Hollis says he must admit the blame for sowing the idea of renaming their Woodside Road ground The Victor Gladwish Stadium '” which has the potential to cause a furore.

Quite apart from any fans protesting, Geoff Raynsford, arguably the greatest captain in Worthing FC history, complained to Hollis about it when setting up his 1980s Rebels team's forthcoming friendly at the ground.

New 30,000-a-season, five-year backer and sugar daddy, Victor Gladwish, told me the club offered to rename Woodside after him as part of the deal thrashed out with him for Rebels by Mark Stevens. Now Hollis has confessed: "When we went to Eastleigh and found out their similar deal entailed renaming their ground the Spa Shop Stadium, I said we ought to do something like that. But I wouldn't want a ground named after me while I was alive."

Woodside is the fifth Victor Gladwish Stadium groundhoppers now need to visit to complete the set. The others are at Chatham Town, Bridlington, Whitstable and Horsham YMCA. The Horsham-based multi-millionaire Gladwish, 61, a former Royal Engineer, who claims he has has suffered three forms of cancer, including undergoing a brain tumour operation in January, heads his own land survey, property sale and conveyancing company.

He says he is financially involved with 30 teams at all levels of non-league football down to the equivalent of Sussex County League Division 3. He has been Rebels' shirt sponsor this season (10,000) and last (8,000).

I asked him what he would say to any who took exception to the new ground name. he replied, without arrogance: "The deal is their gain and I do get some wry comments. This is a hobby. It loses me 1million a year."
