Trip to Spa is anything but relaxing for Midhurst racing driver

After the heartbreak of crashing out on the final corner at Brands Hatch, Midhurst race ace Dan Denis was back in action in the British GT Championship at the fabulous Spa Francorchamps circuit in Belgium.

It was shaping up to be a weekend to remember for Denis and co-driver David McDonald after the pair qualified on pole for both races.

In race one Denis made a great start, keeping the lead into the first corner. From there he pulled out into a 17-second lead as the pitstops arrived, and McDonald stepped into the car. McDonald continued the impressive pace to take the pair’s long-awaited first win by a staggering 26 seconds.

Winning race one meant they had to spend an extra 15 seconds in the pits during the driver change in race two.

McDonald started race two and they had a great battle with Lotus Sport driver Phillip Glew to come into the pits second in class.

Denis jumped into the car and continued to put in good lap times to pull in the leading Lotus. However bad luck struck with just seven minutes to go when the driveshaft let go, leading to another disappointing result.

Despite all the bad luck, Denis and McDonald currently sit fifth in the standings and are still targeting a top-three finish in the championship.

There is now a long break, with the next round at Rockingham near Milton Keynes on September 3 and 4.
