Scott victorious in Planetbowls event

A field of 72 players from across England and Wales took part in the three-day event and there was a enthralling finish in the semi-finals and final on Monday afternoon.

Edwards won his semi-final on a tie break against Jon Wilson, 3-8, 7-2, 2-0, while Adrian Kemish defeated David Dar by one set, 8-8, 8-3, in his last four match.

In the final, Edwards beat Kemish 9-1, 7-1 to win the £1,250 prize money, while Kemish took the runners-up prize of £500.

There was a bounty of £50 – sponsored by Ian Hart – for whoever beat the champion from the previous Planetbowls event. However, as Edwards won, the bounty now rolls over to the next tournament at Essex County Bowls Club later this month.

David Pitt was victorious in the Plate final as he beat Neil Smith on the last end of the tie break, 3-8, 5-3, 2-1, to win the £400 prize money.

The £50 prize for the last member of Worthing Pavilion to remain in the competition was won by Neil Kerkhove, who lost in the quarter-finals to Dar.

Tournament organiser Warwick Davis was delighted with how the weekend went and said: “It couldn’t have gone any better.

“The weather was not as good as last year and we had a slight rain delay on Sunday but everyone enjoyed it.”

Planetbowls director Stephen Roberts said: “It’s been a brilliant weekend and has been supported by the players again. It’s good to be back at Worthing Pavilion and we thank Warwick for sponsoring the event through Jack of Clubs Insurance.

“The players have all enjoyed it. We changed the format slightly this year, so that the Plate was a little bit earlier, so if players did go out early they could go home if they wanted to.

“We’ve got 14 outdoor events this year, all run on a ranking system, so we’ll have a grand final here at the end of the year in September. Again, that’s backed by Warwick and it’s the future of bowls.”

The grand final will take place at Pavilion on September 12 and 13 for the top 32 players on the outdoor circuit. A pairs competition will also run alongside the event.

The Planetbowls outdoor circuit is set to expand further next year and Roberts said: “The outdoor circuit is two years behind the indoor one. We started it after the indoor success and next year we’ve probably got 20 to 25 outdoor tournaments, so it’s just going from strength to strength.

“It’s really taken off and all of the players are supporting it.

“We’re following what the players want and the weather on the final day here made it all the more enjoyable for everybody.”
