Saxons gunning for final fling

South Saxons are confident they will be able to shake off their league disappointment in time for a cup semi-final.

Saxons will host lower grade Hailsham in a Sussex Plate semi-final tomorrow (Saturday) still smarting from last weekend’s 3-0 defeat in a South Hockey League promotion play-off against Tunbridge Wells.

Their captain Pete Watters said: “We’ve lost a few games this year and each time we’ve come back pretty well. Apart from anything else, we want to prove a point.”

Saxons will go into the tie as hot favourites after coming second in South Hockey League Sussex Area - Division One. Hailsham finished in the same position in the league below - Sussex Open League Division Two.

“We’re full of confidence going into the game and I expect to win,” added Watters, “but we won’t take it too lightly and we’ll give them a bit of respect to start with.”

Dave Draper is expected to be the only absentee for competition holders Saxons. The other semi-final is between Middleton & Bognor and Penguin, and the final will be played at Chichester HC on the weekend of May 7-8.
