Saddler's Diary by Geoffrey Dean

This week two ladies came into the shop with saddles for their first flocking top-ups. The saddles had been bought on the same day, but were in different yards.

The first was becoming very supple because the owner had been soaping the saddle every time she used it, and had given it two leather feeds.

The second was as stiff as the day it had been bought. So I showed the owner how to look after it properly , putting plenty of soap and very little water on the sponge and rubbing it in well.

I also reminded her to tgreat the saddle to a quality feed before she gets caught out in the rain.
