Raiders held on to beat Bishop’s Stortford 24-22 in a tense National 2 South encounter after two narrow losses and Dawson said: “It was a big five points and we’ll just take every week as it comes and see where we end up.

“We need to get on a roll. Three out of the four games that we’ve lost, we’ve been in complete and utter control of. At least in two of them, we were winning by two or three clear scores and we’ve let teams back into it, so it’s good to hold on at the end, with great defence.

“It’s frustrating thinking where we could be in the table but sometimes you have to go through pain to enjoy the wins and we’ll enjoy today.

“It’s nice to be on the right side of a close win and I thought we looked much better and much sharper.

“We still had the same old jitters but we came through them today, which is great. “

Raiders now sit seventh in the table, 13 points behind leaders Henley Hawks, who have won all seven games, and eight points behind second-placed Taunton Titans.

Worthing travel to Southend on Saturday. Jamie Redmayne could return but Joe Marchant, Scott Barlow and Jack Metters are all long-term injury absentees.
