Sevens stars celebrate another title

Sussex Seahorse, the locally-based invitation sevens side, claimed its third title in four outings by winning the inaugural Burgess Hill Sussex All Blacks Rugby Tournament.

In the pool games, they beat one of the hosts’ two teams, The All Blacks, 36-5, a Cinque Ports side on their first sevens outing 54-0 and a Barbarians outfit 38-0.

In the semi-finals, they overcame the hosts’ physical Pain Train side, featuring three newly-signed Fijiians and a couple of National League forwards, 12-5.

In the final, they met the All Blacks again, who had seen off the young Lewes team in their semi-final, and this time beat them 22-0 to claim the cup.

The high-scoring squad is coached by Hastings & Bexhill RFC backs coach Kit Claughton, who has featured during this season’s campaign alongside other H&B players Tom Waring, Eliot Parry, Calvin Crosby-Clarke, Bruce Steadman, Chris Stern, Ben Campbell and Piers Claughton, as well as players from Seaford. Rye, Heathfield and Lewes clubs and several Buckswood School old boys.

As for Cinque Ports, they belied what was always going to be a tough challenge by leading 17-6 at half time against Sussex Barbarians before eventually going down 24-17.

After the Seahorse defeat, Ports wrapped the group up by losing 33-10 to Sussex All-Blacks. They then progressed to the Plate competition where Ports were knocked out in the semi-finals by eventual winners Hove 28-7.

Murray Whittington ran in four tries and kicked a conversion during the tournament, while Ross Kearney scoed two tries and slotted a kick.
