RUGBY: Raiders lose in injury-time at Barking

WORTHING RAIDERS exited the EDF Trophy 17-14 at Barking on Saturday (October 18) after they conceded a try three minutes into injury-time.

Barking then converted the try to seal their place in the next round in what was the final play of the game.

Raiders had gone ahead themselves in the first-minute of injury-time when Rob Smith, back in the 1st XV after 14 months out with a shoulder injury, touched down to move Raiders 14-10 in front.

The only score in the first half had been a Barking penalty and the half-time score was 3-0.

Tom Wells kicked two penalties to move Raiders 6-3 ahead before Barking took a 10-6 lead with a converted try.

Then came the injury-time drama.

Raiders team manager David Hinchcliffe said: "If we'd have managed to hang on to the ball for another 10 seconds, we'd have won but it's a cup game, so it's not as vital as if it had been a league match.

"We play at Barking in the league again next weekend and we had just seven or eight first-choice players playing so, hopefully, they haven't found out too much about us.

"We rested quite a few players, and gave a debut to 18-year-old Toby Golds. The cup is a good chance for us to look at players, like Toby, in case we need to call on them later in the season."
