Roffey exit T20 Cup at quarter final stage with one-run defeat

They were beaten in the closest of finishes by East Grinstead in the last 16 game at Roffey.

The home side produced 163-9 in reply to East Grinstead’s 164-6 after they lost the toss and were put in.

Roffey skipper Josh Fleming said: “On Sunday, we lost a very tight game by one run to East Grinstead.

“We put down a couple of chances in the field that cost us a few runs.”

Opener Fynn Hudson-Prentice topscored for the visitors as he hit 58 including seven fours and two sixes.

Fellow opener Will Adkin made 13 and third-man in Lewis Hatchett scored eight before both were dismissed by Rohit Jagota (2-28) with the score on 58-2.

Carl Cachopa (38) put on 66 for the fourth wicket with Hudson-Prentice, before the latter was caught of Alex Collins’ bowling with the score on 124-3.

Dan Smith (2-19) was rewarded for his tight bowling, but a few late swings from Ian Stummer (11) and Raj Chaudhuri (15*) helped them to 164.

In reply, Roffey fell to 7-2 and then 29-4 thanks to an all-round bowling display.

Theodore Rivers (38) and Matt Davies (51) put on 89 for the fifth wicket to get Roffey back in the game, and despite Smith’s 19 and George Fleming’s 14 not out, Collins (two) was run out on the last ball trying to draw the match.

Josh Fleming added: “Again Dan Smith bowled exceptionally to keep us in the game and we felt if we batted well we could chase 164.

“East Grinstead bowled well with the new ball to put us on the back foot, but Matt Davies and Theo put a great partnership together and then the lower order nearly got us over the line but it wasn’t to be.

“It was a great game of cricket though.”
