Rivals leave door ajar for Rebels

WORTHING Football Club's hopes of avoiding relegation stayed alive on Easter Monday when rivals around them failed to win on the eve of Rebels' visit to Horsham (Tuesday).

Walton & Hersham failed to close the gap behind Worthing by losing 2-0 at Hampton & Richmond and still trail third-bottom Rebels by four points, same number of games played.

East Thurrock lost 2-1 at Billericay Town so remain eight points ahead having played one game more than Worthing. Also eight ahead are Ashford Town (Middlesex), same games played as Worthing, thanks to their failure to beat bottom team Slough Town. They drew 1-1 at Ashford. And eight points ahead also, same games played, are Harrow Borough after their 2-1 home defeat by Hendon.

So if Worthing can win at Horsham (who lost 2-0 at Hendon on Saturday), they will close the gap to five points on East Thurrock, Ashford Town (Middx) and Harrow Borough, with then three games left to play. Worthing need to keep winning but require one of these clubs to falter seriously in the final run-in, preferably two if Rebels are to avoid the provisional fourth relegation spot.
