Penalty refusal could send Worthing down

WORTHING'S Ryman Premier Division survival hopes took perhaps their final blow at Horsham when they were left with only a 1-1 draw. Referee Carl Brook refused to give a penalty 30 seconds from time when Mark Knee seemed to have had the legs taken from under him on the point of shooting for goal.

Rebels needed to win and looked ripe for it six minutes into the game when Sam Francis lofted the ball over Hornets keeper Alan Mansfield from just 10 yards inside the Horsham half.

Twice Worthing could have had another in the next four minutes but Omari Coleman and Leo Day failed with glaring chances.

Rebels gradually lost momentum after dominating the first 20 minutes and in the 40th Horsham levelled from as far out as Francis' effort. The free kick was direct out on the left wing and John Westcott's delivery swerved into the far side of the Worthing net as keeper Rikki Banks covered the near.

As the game entered the final throes, Omari Coleman could not quite get the ball down onto his favourite left foot to bury it before being tackled and then came the penalty appeal that left the Worthing fans suspecting that Mr Brook was not brave enough to give.

Rebels cannot stay up unless they win their last three games and rivals East Thurrock, Ashford Town (Middlesex) and Harrow Borough all fail to accumulate three points from their last games - three matches for East Thurrock and four each Ashford and Harrow, both including one against Worthing.

On Saturday. Harrow come to Woodside Road.
