Outclassed Worthing's defiant second half

Worthing's Women fell at the penultimate Sussex Cup hockey hurdle. They lost 4-2 in their semi-final at home, at St Andrew's School, to Horsham 2nd from a division above, and who will play either Chichester or Lewes in the final.

Worthing could have taken the lead with two early short corners, and won the count in the second half 6-3. But Horsham's extra sharpness and pace threw Worthing onto the back foot in the first half and they were fortunate to go into half-time only 2-0 down.

A third Horsham goal four minutes into the second half effectively settled it but Kim Northam reduced the arrears from Worthing's third short corner of the half.

Although ex-Worthing and Chichester forward Siobhan Aherne immediately made it 4-1 with a solo run past several switched off defenders, Worthing replied defiantly with possibly the goal of the game.

Kelly Stevens, their 13-year-old left back, having come off the bench in the first half, sent leading Horsham scorer Caroline Petty yards out of contention with a nonchalant turn, in her own half, then found Toni Catlow whose pass was turned into goal by Andi Grainger whose determination to score defeated a defender and the oncoming keeper Holly Kay.

Richard Amey's live report will be in the Herald.
