King gets taste of Portugal

Yolanda King represented England girls at the Portuguese Youth Table Tennis Championships in Tavira.

Although her overall results were not outstanding, the 17-year-old from Hastings had good moments, notably two tight singles wins which were decisive in England’s 3-2 victory over Italy in the team event.

In her singles group, the Weald TTC (Cranbrook) member took Portuguese star and top seed Maria Xiao close, going down 8-11, 12-14, 6-11. Xiao went on to win the event.

King, who trains at the Grantham Academy, will have been disappointed, however, to lose 1-3 to Giorgia Piccolin, who she had beaten in the team event, in her other group match.

The national no.2 junior girl and no.8 senior woman went straight on to an England youth training camp at the English Institute of Sport, Sheffield.
