Homefield bowlers Truran and Kuhler retain their titles

Singles Championship for the second consecutive year.

And in a remarkable double-double for Homefield Park, club-mate Lorriane Kuhler also retained the Bowls England National Junior Pairs Championship with Sussex team-mate Emma Cooper on Sunday.

Truran’s prestigious title victory comes as an early birthday present for the Haywards Heath-based bowler who turns 55 next week.

The Sussex representative won the title for the second successive year on Saturday after a 21-14 win over Sue Davies, from Broadway, Worcestershire, in the final at Victoria Park, after a dramatic fight back from 10-1 down.

Truran said: “I was delighted and it is just amazing. I was not so much (delighted) last year as it felt as if I was dreaming, but this time it feels like a real win.

“When I am competing it is hard because everyone there playing is very good but I have played very well, I think.

“It’s brilliant for me because everyone is so good and it feels like I have played very well to win.”

Truran had overcome Liz Russell, from Lyndhurst, Hampshire, 21-17 in the semi-finals, after a 21-14 success over Joan Welch, from Riverain, Hertfordshire, in the last eight.

She has competed in the finals in some capacity in almost ever year since 1993, but previous to her back-to-back victories, her best performance in the singles had been a semi-final appearance in 2004, while Sussex’s last winner was back in 1957.

Truran is now set to represent England at the end of the year in New Zealand for the world champion of champions event.

She will travel to Christchurch for the event which takes place from November 25 to December 1.

Kuhler, 23, from Lancing, along with Battle’s Cooper retained their title by beating Leicestershire’s Marie De Bie and Katie Smith 17-12 in the final.
