Haywards Heath Harriers' juniors take centre stage

Last Sunday (6th March), Under 13 Haywards Heath Harrier Adam Dray competed for Sussex in the Sports Hall Inter Counties match at The Triangle, Burgess Hill against six other counties.

As the leading U13 Boy Speed Bounce jumper in the Sussex League, there were high hopes of him finishing in a medal position. With a best score prior to this match of 89, Adam produced an excellent performance of 90 speed bounces in 30 seconds, finishing in joint 1st place and picking up a Gold Medal. He was also part of the U13 Boys 4 x 2 Lap Relay who finished 2nd. He completed the set with the U13 Boys team finishing with a bronze in the team competition.

The previous weekend, Harriet Dray and Freddie Johnson competed in the Sports Hall Fun in Athletics Festival, again at the Triangle, and both performed extremely well. Harriet’s team finished 5th in the Obstacle Relay, she finished 8th in the Speed Bounce and 7th= in Target Throw with the U11 Girls team finishing 7th. Freddie’s team were 3rd in the Obstacle Relay and 6th in the Over/Under Relay. He was 6th in the High Stepper and 14th in the Chest Push with the U11 Boys team finishing 6th.

Last Saturday was also the English Schools Cross Country Championships in Nottingham. Harriers Joseph Martin and Darja Knotkova-Hanley both competed for the Sussex Schools Team, gaining selection by competing well at the Sussex Schools Championships held earlier in the year. Joseph, in the Junior Boys race, finished an excellent 59th out of over 360 and the Sussex Junior Boys Team won the silver medal overall. Darja, who was at the younger end of the age group, ran well in the Inter Girls race to finish 257th.

The Sussex Grand Prix kicked off again this weekend and as holders of the title, the Harriers are hoping for another winning season. The Eastbourne Half Marathon was first up and a technical challenge with a severe climb towards Beachy Head, a twisting section through Sovereign Harbour and long flat sections along the seafront. Russ Mullen followed up his win at last weekend’s Clair parkrun by finishing a brilliant fifth with his time of 1:18.24. Graham Hart was next Harrier home in 1:26:42 and Naomi Cikalo was first female Harrier in 1:44.02.

Michael Burke followed up his PB at the Brighton Half Marathon by running the Milton Keynes Festival of Running 20 mile race in a great time of 2:24.58.
