The 27-year-old actually led the way after a seven-under first round 63 last Thursday in which he carded four birdies on either nine with just a solitary bogey.

Evans began the second round with successive bogeys and a triple bogey seven on the ninth meant he reached the turn in 40, but came back well with three birdies and one bogey on the back nine to sign for a three-over 73.

He mixed two birdies with two bogeys over the front nine in round three before two birdies and no bogeys on the back nine saw him round in 68.

Evans, of Rye and Sedlescombe Golf Clubs, made one birdie and two bogeys on the front nine in round four, but four birdies and no blemishes on the back nine added up to a 67.

Evans wrote on social media site Twitter afterwards: “Nice to have good week on the course. Very happy with my first top five of the year. Looking forward to a week off and then Kazakhstan #Tired”
