Golf: Selsey’s stars savour silver share-out

The President’s Prize was organised by Keith Homer, president of the club, and it was well supported with 45 taking part. It was won by Alun Morey with 40 Stableford points and the runner-up was Billy Aspital with 39.

The annual south v north event was played over 36 holes. The winners this year were the north team by 18½-13½.

Other competitions held recently include the Clifford Burton Cup, won by Ashley Burton with a nett 64. Second was Billy Aspital with 65.

The September monthly medal in division one was won by Simon Brooks with 41 points. Division two was won by Dan Fern with 40.

The Captain’s Choice Stableford was won by Simon Brooks; runner-up was Alun Morey.

In 2000 it was decided that the Claret Jug would be played annually in honour of Max Faulkner, who owned Selsey Golf Club with his father from 1949 to 1957. Faulkner was Open champion in 1951.

This year the competition was open to all players and threw up some great golf. The winner was Roger Cawte with a nett score of 65, ahead of Kevin Fielder on countback. Third was Eddie Williamson with 67. Cawte received the jug from Craig Newman.

The Grafton Shield was won by Matt Hurst and Barry Rishman; second were Simon Aspital and his son Billy

The Ralfs Salver for the 2015 singles knock-out competition was won by Jamie McKinlay from Dan Russell

The Annual vets v men’s section competition was won by the men, who already held the trophy.

CHICHESTER

The rains came down on the last day of Bev Shrives-Wrist’s reign as Chichester veterans’ captain, but 43 doughty souls turned out to compete for the traditional Texas scramble that marks the end of the summer season.

It was an extremely close contest as Mike Snuggs took his team of John Galvin and Lawrie Pirie to a nett score of 62.6 with Bruce Santer and Eric Bourne close behind on 63.2.

The event was followed by Bev presenting a cheque for £3,580 to his chosen charity, CLIC Sargent, whose representative gave a talk about the wonderful work they do for children with cancer.

The end-of-season prizegiving followed and this year was notable for the performances of Paul Compton. He was the winner of both singles and doubles matchplay competitions and won two trophies, the Claret Jug and the Championship Handicap Cup.

His consistent form throughout the year, which has taken his handicap down to ten, enabled him to walk off with the order of merit trophy in which he amassed 59 points, 17 ahead of nearest rival Gordon Williams.

Other notable successes this year were victories by two octogenerians. First Maurice Hall, a founder member of the vets, won the Founders’ Day Cup and then Brian Melbourn was victorious in the Captains’ Cup.

Overall it was a wonderful year for Bev with a fine season of inter-club matches, 22 of which were won, two halved and nine lost.

BOGNOR

Bognor Golf Club’s annual awards evening saw more than 50 trophies given to this year’s winners as well as mementoes to the runners-up.

Club captain Simon Watts presented the trophies and was well supported throughout the evening by club secretary James MacLean.

It was nice to see septuagenarian Joe Flanagan win the vets’ knockout trophy by beating a number of players ten to 15 years younger than him over the course of the summer.

Notable events this year included Mark Watson’s nett 59 in the RNLI Medal and Mark Carter’s two gross 79s in the Autumn Tankard, which beat his age twice in a weekend.

There were six holes-in-one in competitions during the year, while Bognor’s Scratch team came back from 4-0 down in the morning session to win 6½-5½ against Crowborough Beacon.

The club had county representation with Suzanne Taylor and Chloe Court playing for Sussex ladies and Katie Field and Jake Stoneham for Sussex juniors.

A men’s four-ball team event attracted a good field and on damp, cool morning scoring was difficult. Winners with 114 points were Gary and Marcus Embleton, Mark Bingham and Dave Grover. Second with 112 were Alan Enticott, Roy Tidy, Cameron Lang and Chris Johnson and third on 110 were Brian Meloy, Doug Lowman, Brian Bowditch and Mick Carrigan.

COWDRAY PARK

Cowdray Park seniors’ weather-jinxed season continued with disruption to the ever-popular Texas ccramble.

Soon after the first few groups had teed off, strong winds and driving rain moved in to make life unpleasant for all concerned, with the weather relenting only for a brief time.

The teams teeing off early had an advantage of playing some holes in the dry before conditions deteriorated, although many battled through to the end, others found an early return to the warm, dry clubhouse irresistible.

Winners, as in recent years, were a three-man team of Paul Owen, Mark Kelly and Mike Holden with a total of 62.2 points. Second place went Bill Hummerston, Brian Brockhurst, Dave Balfour and Chris Hutchins with a total of 62.5.

Captain Sam Howes was proud to advise that, up to the end of September, the seniors had raised £4,075 for his charity Dreams Come True.

GOODWOOD

Golf At Goodwood raised more than £8,000 for a local children’s hospice in Sussex at their inaugural charity golf day.

More than 72 golfers from across all Goodwood clubs took to the famous West Sussex golf course in iconic Woody golf buggies, taking part in various challenges as well as relishing the challenge of the Downs course.

Chestnut Tree House cares for more than 300 children in East and West Sussex and parts of south-east Hampshire.

Competitors dug deep for Goodwood’s nominated charity of the year in a silent auction, which included many fantastic experiences from across the Goodwood Estate.

An off-road driving experience and a spin and slide session with Ultimate Driving at Goodwood was among the list of experiences, along with two helicopter pleasure flights, a Rolls-Royce experience and Goodwood horse-racing membership. The event also included a three-course meal at The Kennels.

Stuart Gillett, Golf At Goodwood general manager, said: “This is the first time we have organised an event of this kind for our Goodwood Club members and it was a resounding success.

“The course was in immaculate condition for everyone to enjoy, we had spells of glorious sunshine and we raised a fantastic amount of money for Chestnut Tree House.

“We greatly appreciate the support of everyone who took part and look forward to continuing the event for many years to come and making it bigger and better with further opportunities to raise as much money as possible.”

Cowdray ladies played nine holes golf followed by a coffee morning in aid of Macmillan. The fun format of the golf had penalties for losing a ball, hitting the ball into a bunker or three putting. The figure raised on the morning was just over £350.

Results: Holes 1-5, 15-8 - 1 Sue Morris 19pts; 2 Joy Reineck 18; Holes 10-14, 6-9 - 1 Wendy Street 17, 2 Caroline Smith 17.

LITTLEHAMPTON

On Junior Captain’s Day, 11-year-old Joshua McCartain won the Junior Captain’s Trophy with a superb 40 Stableford points.

Finlay Allen, 14, was runner-up just a point behind.

The junior captain for 2015-16 will be Joe Sykes, who drove in front of the clubhouse.

The captain thanked all members who took part on the day, with the main event won by the team of George Fenneymore, Will Fenneymore, Terry Rolfe and Kevin Miles with 88 points.

Nearest the pin spot prizes were won by Joe Sykes, Oliver Hemsley and Drew Sykes.
