Golf: Chichester ladies make the most of the sun

The winner with a nett score of 71 was Amanda Mackenzie, which meant a cut in her handicap to 24. Second with 74 was junior captain Rebecca Curd and third was Melva Bateman with 75.

A recent Tuesday featured two concurrent competitions, the Cathedral Cup and the Tower Trophy. The latter was for ladies with handicaps between 29 and 36. Changeable weather resulted in reduced fields.

The winner of the Cathedral Cup was Sang Porter with 36 points on countback. Second was Elaine Fell and third with 35 was Yvonne Dunckley.

Winning the Tower Trophy with an impressive 40 points was Sue Bond. Second with 34 was Jennifer Sherwood on countback from third-placed Wendy Jeffery.

The Weekend Trophy produced some great scoring. The winner with a remarkable 43 points was Sarah Jessop, resulting in a cut in handicap of four shots. A close second was Mary-Lou Litton with 42 and third with 38 was Rebecca Curd.

VALLEY GOLF CHALLENGE

The annual Valley Charity Golf Challenge between Singleton, Charlton and East Dean was held for the fourth year, this time in aid of the Prostate Cancer Research Centre.

A golf competition at Chiddingfold Golf Club was followed by a dinner, auction, raffle and other games at East Dean Village Hall.

On a separate day, further funds were raised by an inter-village stoolball competition and tug of war at East Dean FC.

Singleton won the golf competition, with Charlton second. Singleton are one up in the series. Individual golf winner on the day was Nick Oldham with a magnificent 42 points.

The stoolball competition and the tug of war were both won by East Dean.

The organisers have praised all the individuals and sponsors who contributed to the success of the event, including Fullers, Specsavers, Orvis, Chichester Gas, Bartholomews, Molson-Coors and The Textile Space.

Local villager Sam Tod, of Tod Anstee, donated the sponsorship money made from his participation in the Chichester half marathon.

Some £5,000 has already been received for the prostate research centre, with more to come.

BOGNOR

There were 30 entrants for the Members Day 4 clubs and a putter competition, played in 3 balls with 2 scores to count per hole.

The winning team, with 79 points were Paul Black, Dave Hollis and Trevor Woodland. Richard Barnett, Bill Cronin and Trevor Till were second on 76, Rob and Sue Redmond and Bob Wilson were third on 75. The ladies team of Wendy Bell, Sue Doughty and Lynn Harbutt were 7th with 69 points.

Eighty took part in the men’s autumn invitation. Guests were from clubs in Oxford, Worcester, Kent, Surrey and Sussex.

Breakfast preceded the shotgun start for the 18-hole fourball betterball three-quarters handicap competition.

Kevin Holland and Cowdray Park’s David Turner won with 41 points. Second were Andy Isitt and Petersfield’s Bob Gray with 40 points, on countback from JJ Stephenson and Surbiton’s Bruce Maskell, who won last year.

Bob Wilson and Raoul Ellis (West Hove) were fourth on 39. Nearest the pin on the fifth was Jan De Vries (Cowdray); Michael Paige (Avisford) was nearest on the tenth and Peter Hardcastle (Cowdray) was nearest the 16th in two.

Sixteen fourballs, each featuring one man, one vet, one lady and one junior, took part in the annual Four Team Challenge.

At the halfway stage the men were leading but the closing matches from the vets and the juniors produced a great finish.

Despite two impressive rounds by the juniors, Olli Longlands’ 68 and Jordan Vincent’s 69 - it all rested on the last fourball with the vets scoring three points to win the event with 44 points. The juniors scored 43, the men 40 and the ladies 34.

Despite a gritty performance the seniors lost at home to Haywards Heath 4½-3½.

Scores: R Selway & J Woodhead won 1 up, J Owen & J Catt won 1 up, R Hedge & J King lost 4&3, P Lott & J Barker halved, G Steventon & P Black lost 5&4, C Millett & P Collins lost 4&3, T Wells & B Bennett won 2 up, A Delves & V Ward lost 3&2.

A cheque for £4,010 was presented by Bognor ladies’ captain Denise Duquemin to Diana Levantine, the co-founder and trustee of the Sussex Snowdrop Trust. The charity provides care at home for local children with life-threatening or terminal illness.

Diana thanked everyone for their great support and generosity.

COWDRAY PARK

Conditions were miserable for Cowdray Park seniors (pictured at the top of the article) home match against Rowlands Castle, with continuous drizzle and a stiff breeze the order of the day.

The lead match ended in an honourable draw, with Cowdray’s match manager Ken Newberry and Trevor Edwards only losing the lead on the final green. Biggest win of the day, by 6&5, came from Terry Jasper and Mike Hancock, overcoming the concession of a number of shots to their opponents.

At halfway it was 2½-2½ but all three matches teeing off at the 17th ended in Cowdray wins, starting with a 3&1 win for David Imlach and Tony Castley, to give the home side victory by 5½-2½.

Revenge was sweet for Cowdray seniors in their traditional final away match at Corhampton. The visitors triumphed 6-2, having suffered a rare home defeat - 5-3 - earlier in the season.

The hosts did not concede victory easily as three matches went to the 18th and three others were decided 2&1. The course was in excellent condition, while the camaraderie between both sets of players confirmed this as one of the most popular matches on Cowdray’s fixture list.

AVISFORD PARK

A Ben Ross introduction day competition was won with 44 points by Jeremy Newman. Second, also with 44, was Steve Redfern and third with 37 was Paul Rosin.

The nearest-the-pin winners were Peter Mitchell on the ninth and George Stillwell on the 13th. Nearest the pin in twos on the fourth was Lee Passey and the straightest drive on the 11th was Andy Cooke.

The weekday medal was won by Rodney West with a nett 70. The weekend Stableford was won by Martin Gill with 38 points. The ladies’ Stableford was won by Lynne Collins with 30.

The senior Stableford was won in division one by Peter Smith with 39 points and in division two by Basil Woolven with 43.

The winter breakfast plate was won by Chris Wall, Roger Boorer and Jayson Walker with 81 points. Runners-up, also with 81, were Grant Walker, Lloyd Walker and Daniel McGuinness.
