Glynde sail on as Adams cracks 132

Npower Village Knockout Cup Glynde 246-6 Weston Colville 137 Glynde won by 109 runsOPENER Joe Adams hit a magnificent 132 not out as Glynde beat Cambridgeshire side Weston Colville to go through to the last eight in a fine sporting villages contest at the Recreation Ground on Sunday.

The quarter-finals will be the furthest Glynde have gone in the competition and they will be at home to Hampshire's Easton & Martyr Worthy, who hail from the outskirts of Winchester, on Sunday, July 30. If Glynde win they are guaranteed a home semi-final.

In baking conditions Adams produced a beautifully-crafted innings of controlled defence mixed with powerful aggression as he batted through the 40 overs, facing 121 balls and compiling 16 fours and four sixes in his knock.

The 19-year-old Adams, who has hit four centuries in the East Sussex League this season including a career best of 171, fully deserved the applause of another large crowd basking in the sunshine when he moved through to his ton. Typical of the sportsmanship on the day was the gesture of Weston captain Adrian Westley, who was quickly over to shake Adams's hand.

Weston were no slouches in the field, and Westley and Luke Stanley produced some fine pace bowling while spinners Scott Webb and Tom Daniels also presented plenty of problems.

However, Adams was in irrepressible form and was well supported in sizeable stands by a number of Glynde batsmen.

After Dominic Shepheard had been caught for eight the diminutive 19-year-old Dominic Harris joined Adams and immediately cracked his first delivery for four. He moved through to 18 before falling to a superb slip catch, the stand with Adams tallying 55 important runs.

Robbie Mouland then joined Adams and contributed 15 in a stand of 55 with Adams for the third wicket, while Adam Davies added an aggressive 25 before having a stump flattened.

The Glynde innings then dropped anchor a little against some tidy bowling, but Stuart Mouland (ten) and Callum Smith (five) helped Adams along before he launched a final assault on the Weston bowling.

With skipper Dale Tranter (three not out) at the other end Glynde took 32 from the last two overs to tally 246-6, a good score on a dry pitch.

It looked even better for Glynde when Weston were quickly reduced to 1-1 as 2nd XI pace bowler Paul Rolfe, in for the injured Mark Beddis, grabbed the wicket of Adam Taylor, but he then took some stick as the visiting batsmen found a liking for his bowling.

Adam Curtis (33) and Scott Webb (31) scored 63 in quick time and Glynde needed to stem the flow. Shepheard worked the oracle with his first delivery which yielded a catch to Adam Davies, and then Harris took a hard return catch low to his right followed by a Darren Howard stumping to reduce Weston to 75-4.

Wickets were now falling regularly and at 137-9 a wag on the hill played The Last Post as the final Weston batsmen came to the crease. He quickly fell to Sam Adams as he mopped up the tail. Harris took 3-31, Shepheard 2-31 and Sam Adams 3-6.
