From great driving on golf course - to great driving behind wheel of Porsche

The nine-handicapper from Aldwick played consistently over ten club events to win the title and is looking forward to taking on the challenge of the great track.

“I can’t wait to go to Silverstone and get behind the wheel of the different Porsches. I’m thrilled to have won the first order of merit and when the competition was launched and the prize announced I was certainly eager to play well and it really added to the competitive spirit,” he said.

Golf At Goodwood joined forces with the Mid Sussex Porsche Centre, who host their annual golf day over the award-winning Downs course to offer the winner a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to compete at the historic circuit.

The Porsche driving experience started in 1974 with the launch of the 930 Turbo to provide exciting driving experiences which refine drivers’ ability and have proved popular over nearly 40 years.

Stuart Gillett, general manager of Golf At Goodwood, said: “It’s fabulous to have the support of Mid Sussex Porsche who also sponsor our members’ invitation day.

“To be able to give our members something unique is what we are all about here at Goodwood and in its first year the order of merit was a great success.

“It’s sure to be even more competitive in 2012 with a number of members already practising hard in a bid to take the title.”

CHICHESTER

Chichester ladies have played two exciting competitions. The first was a waltz – no fancy footwork, just teams of three counting one score on the first, two on the second and three on the third, and so on.

Winners with 79 points were Yvonne Dunckley, Sue Ward and Lyn Santer; second were Jane Buckley, Sandi Johnstone and Margaret Leigh with 75 and third with 72 were Jean Davis, Angela Hancock and Janet Leonard.

In a Texas scramble, the winning team with 70.2 were Kathy Donohoe, Maureen Selway and Sandi Johnstone ahead of Caroline Hawkes, Sue Ward and Jan Barnes with 73.7. Elaine Fell, Val Swain and Wendy Jeffrey took third with 74.6.

The Saturday ladies enjoyed a Bogey Bisque competition. The in-form winner was Yvonne Dunckley on count back with plus two, second was Judy Laycock, and third with zero was Helen Ball.

The Saturday ladies also completed, over two separate days, their own version of the Solheim Cup. They called their version the Karsten Cup after the legendary Karsten Solheim.

The teams, randomly selected, played a four-ball better-ball competition and singles. The European team took a 5½-4½ win.

COWDRAY PARK

Cowdray Park’s Winter League side returned home for their penultimate game of the season in the Surrey & West Sussex Winter League, hoping to make up ground on leaders Puttenham.

Although Cowdray beat Guildord, 3-1, Puttenham replicated that score in beating Bramley to keep the advantage over Cowdray to 3.5 points.

Captain Marvel Terry Jasper kept up his fine record as skipper by winning again, this time with Mike Purdie – the margin 4&3. The second match went to the visitors who sneaked home at the 18th.

The home side pressed home their advantage with excellent wins by the two Daves, Hirons and Tilley, who won 4&3, and Jan de Vries and John Doran with an even more impressive 5&3 win.

Cowdray Park seniors held their delayed third round of the Captain’s Prize.

Among the first group out was single-figure handicapper David Heard, whose excellent 39 points to set the target. He almost achieved an ace on the par-three 11th hole. Another single-figure handicapper, Dave Hirons, and partner Tony Castley scored 35 and 37 respectively to lead for most of the day, though they were threatened later by John Doran (35) and Frank Cheevers (37). A countback review revealed first prize was due to Hirons and Castley.

John Doran’s 35 left him one short of overall winner Cliff Davis, whose three rounds of 38 points meant he deserved to win by virtue of his consistency.

Joint third, on 110, were Ian Goodall and Tony Castley. The prizes for nearest-the-pin on the par threes went to Bruce Spooner (third), Mick Fillary (ninth), David Heard (11th) and Richard Cockman (17th).

AVISFORD PARK

Avisford Park faced the Trouts in the latest leg of their ongoing series. They began 4-2 down, but won 6½-3½ to close the gap to 4-3.

The senior Stableford was won in division one by Tony Stansfield with 39 points and in division two by Roger Lewis won with 37 points.

The ladies’ Stableford was won by Jenny Patterson with 20 points.

Robert Kuszka was celebrating on Monday after a hole in one on the second green.
