Mid-table Westfield were thumped 6-1 away to Sussex County Football League Division Two leaders Eastbourne United AFC - comfortably their heaviest defeat of the season.

Westfield might have hoped that their opponents would have one eye on their FA Vase quarter-final at home to Ampthill Town on Saturday, but Eastbourne showed they were very much focused on the task in hand by scoring four times in the first half-hour.

Joe Dryer set the ball rolling in the 15th minute and Matt Maclean added a second goal six minutes later. Wes Tate made it 3-0 in the 23rd minute and when Dan Pollard bagged the fourth just four minutes after that, the result was already firmly beyond doubt.

Gordon Cuddington nabbed a consolation for Westfield shortly after the hour mark, but Eastbourne weren’t finished and Tate claimed his second of the night to make it 5-1 in the 79th minute.

Callum Saunders completed the rout just before the end as an Eastbourne side which has lost just once in the league all season maintained its six-point cushion at the top of the table.

As previously reported, Rye United’s scheduled match away to East Grinstead Town in Sussex Division One was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.
