Tributes paid to 'big character in local football' who is 'irreplaceable'

Eastbourne Town and Sidley United have paid tribute to Roger Lee, who died this week aged 73.

Roger was heavily involved with both clubs and also played in goal for Little Common and had a goalkeeping coaching role at Rye United before joining the Saffrons side.

Town boss John Lambert said: "Roger was a big character in local football , and first meet him when i joined Sidley many years ago.

"Roger was old school as we say, a no nonsense fella that wanted things done right as a player and a coach.

"He has been at Town with me since I have been there, so l never had to worry about the keepers knowing Roger was coaching them. He will be irreplaceable for me and I along with everyone connected with Eastbourne Town will miss him terribly."

Sidley United chairman Dickie Day said: "Sidley United would like to extend our sincere condolences to the family.

"Roger was an integral part of our dressing room during our most successful period. As goalkeeper coach he trained the keepers separately and always to a high standard. His commitment to Sidley United both on and off the field was highly commendable.

"He and Val were always on hand when it came to fundraising events and bootsales which was so important and much valued. He was a friend of the club even after moving on to Eastbourne Town and will be well remembered by all involved at the club."
