Shoreham progress past Worthing United in FA Cup
Shoreham Football Club progressed into the preliminary round of the FA Cup with a 3-0 win away to local rivals Worthing United on Saturday.
Goals from George Gaskin, Devante Davis and Ryan Stevens banked £1,500 prize money for Mussels and set up a home tie with Ryman League South Division side Dorking Wanderers in the next round.
Shoreham had a couple of openings before taking the lead on 15 minutes. United failed to clear Dave O’Callaghan’s corner and Gaskin pounced to fire home from close range.
Mussels doubled their advantage six minutes later when Gaskin raced on to Andy Pearson’s long ball forward and crossed for Davis to rise highest at the back post and head home.
Chances for United were few and far between in the first half but Owen Callaghan headed straight at Shoreham keeper Josh Heyburn, either side of Gaskin and Rob O’Toole going close for the visitors.
Mavericks almost got a goal back early in the second period but Alfie Gritt’s deflected shot went just the wrong side of the post.
With the heat sapping the energy of the players in the second half, few chances were created. Gritt had another deflected effort saved by Heyburn in the final minute, before Shoreham added a third deep in injury-time.
Ryan Stevens went on a mazy run and after Mitchell Hand’s shot was saved, Richard Greenfield squared for Stevens to tap home from four yards.
United boss Nigel Geary said: “We’ve got to get out of the habit of giving easy goals away. All of the time we’re giving good teams goal starts we’re out the game, we can’t do it.
“I don’t think there was much between the two sides, they created a bit more than us but I don’t think it was a 3-0 game. It was a lot more even than that.”
Shoreham manager Bryan O’Toole said: “It was a hot day but I felt we were in total control and it was pleasing to keep a clean sheet.
“As a whole, it was a good, solid away performance.”
