Late Bexhill goal sends Steyning to away defeat

Steyning boss John Suter was left disappointed with his side’s late loss at Bexhill United on Saturday.

Town took the lead when Kris Harding netted four minutes after the break, but goals from Scott McDonald and Andy Atkin, two minutes from time, meant Steyning slipped to defeat.

Suter said: “I was very disappointed to come away from the game with nothing.

“We dominated proceedings in the first half and should have gone in at least a goal ahead.

“I was a little concerned how we would come out in the second half but full credit to the lads for scoring so soon after the break.

“We usually concede soon after half-time so for us to get a goal was a pleasant surprise. But instead of giving us confidence, the goal seemed to help them and they really came at us after we went ahead. Once they levelled we began to struggle and a former player of mine, Andy Atkin, scored with two minutes to go.”

The visitors took the lead four minutes after the break when Harding went through and slotted past the Bexhill goalkeeper.

The home side did manage to grab an equaliser on 71 minutes when Scott McDonald scored.

Bexhill went close on a number of occasions in the final minutes and got the winner two minutes from time as Atkin headed the ball home.
