Former Albion star’s new book

“IN and out of the Lion’s Den” is a new book telling the story of a former Albion player with Southwick links.

The book is about John Shepherd, who played for Albion in the late 1950s and was the top goalscorer in their first ever season in Division 2 in 1958-59.

After finishing his professional playing career at Gillingham, he took over as player/manager at Southwick Football Club.

Shepherd got Wickers promoted into Division 1 of the Sussex County League and in 1968 took them to victory in the Sussex Senior Cup for the first time in the club’s history, beating Horsham at the Goldstone Ground.

Shepherd, who overcame polio to pursue his professional career, returned to the Albion during the 1970s, first as a scout and then youth coach, and founded the first-ever Brighton & Hove Albion youth team during Alan Mullery’s reign as manager.

He also returned to Wickers in a management team with son Dominic in 2008.

The book – which is written by John’s daughter Julie Ryan – is available to buy from some book shops and online at Amazon.
