Baker’s last game in charge was a 1-1 draw with local rivals Upper Beeding in SCFL Division 2 on Saturday.

He said: “It was getting to the point where I was so busy at work and just wasn’t getting the buzz from going to matches that I once did.

“I’m just going to go to watch a few games and see if I get the buzz back.

“I’m only 34 and have managed for over ten years as I had to stop playing at a young age, so I just want to get back to enjoying watching football.

“I’ve enjoyed the last two and a half years back at Lancing United and I think it’s a really attractive job for someone to take over.

“There’s an excellent squad there and a superb dressing room, I just hope all the players stay together there.”

United secretary Glenn Souter said: “James has built a terrific 1st XI squad for the club over the past few seasons and last season’s league and cup double were a fantastic achievement.

“However, we are now in a strong SCFL Division 2 and we can not dwell on James’s departure and need to find a suitable replacement as soon as possible. Time stands still for no club and getting the wheels back in motion with immediate effect is our primary aim now.

“We are hoping that the majority of the squad stay in situ, but are also realistic that at this level, players do tend to play for a manager and not the club.

“Only time will tell how the situation unfolds but we would like to thank James for his efforts and wish him the best of luck in whatever he chooses to do next.

“As a committee, we have a built a great club over the past three years after being on the verge of folding and we will not let this bump in the road deter us from progressing further both on and off the field.”
