FOOTBALL: Rustington are smashed for six

RUSTINGTON Football Club's winless run stretched to nine games on Saturday when they crashed 6-1 at top-of-the-table Worthing United in County League Division 2.

Blues slipped to fifth from bottom with the defeat and their manager, Pete Matthews, said: "I'm disappointed '“ we were beaten by the better team but we're not giving up.

"I'm looking for a response and we've got to keep fighting. We lacked confidence and it was a fair result. They outplayed us, I've got some new signings in the pipeline, which could be what we need to turn things around."

United set the tone early on and twice went close through Sam Corkhill and Gareth Green. It was deserved, therefore, when they went ahead in the 18th minute. Richard Carter was brought down in the penalty area by Chris Green, and United skipper Julian Curnow sent Blues keeper James Askew the wrong way from the spot.

Rustington's first chance fell to Steve Kirkham, who was denied by a good save from Ross Standen, but United almost doubled their lead when Corkhill's long-range drive flashed just wide.

The second goal did arrive soon afterwards when James Bentley's cross struck Rustington defender Adam Goff and, unluckily, rolled into his own net.

With Blues still reeling, the game appeared to have ended as a contest when Corkhill fired home his first goal for United in superb fashion. He took a touch on his chest, rode a challenge and rifled home past Askew.

Blues never gave up and almost reduced the deficit just before half-time but Kirkham's close-range shotwas kept out by a superb reaction stop from Standen.

United debutant Shaheen Sadough, who had been quiet up to that point, made his mark on the game 15 minutes after half-time. His initial shot was saved, but he reacted quickest and bundled home from close range.

Then he was at it again two minutes later. He received the ball, turned his marker and smashed home from inside the penalty area.

Blues' James Bennett headed over before United added their sixth with 10 minutes left. Substitute Chris Georgiou weaved into the box, and after his initial shot was blocked, it looped back for him to head home.

Rustington got the final goal of the game right at the death. Kirkham was fouled by Curnow and Bennett slotted home the resulting spot-kick.
