FOOTBALL: High fives as Wick got top

WICK Football Club went back to the top of the County League on Saturday, with a 5-2 win over Crawley Down but assistant manager Brett Torode refused to get carried away with their position.

Wick sit a point clear at the top of the table but have played two more games than second-placed Whitehawk, who many had tipped to run away with the league.

However, Hawks, who Wick beat earlier in the season, lost to another one of the high-flyers, Shoreham, on Saturday and Wick took full advantage.

Torode wants to keep his side's feet firmly on the ground, though, and said: "It was a good win, we deserved it and took our chances well.

"We were the better side and to be top of the league is excellent but we're not getting carried away.

"League positions don't count for much until after Christmas and there are some excellent teams up there with us."

On Saturday, Crawley Down took the lead in the 12th minute as Tony Reid converted from the penalty spot.

Wick equalised with 34 minutes gone, when Dan Swain converted Phil Turner's cross after a well-worked move.

After the break, a Crawley own goal saw Wick go 2-1 ahead on 65 minutes, and they then started to dominate proceedings.

Two minutes later, George Gaskin added another, before Turner added the fourth from the penalty spot after 77 minutes with his 10th goal of the campaign.

Two minutes later, Jason Jarvis got Wick's fifth, with his first goal of the season, from Gaskin's pass.

Sam Cane then pulled back a late consolation for Crawley in the closing stages.

Wick take on Hailsham Town on Saturday at Crabtree Park in the second round of the Sussex RUR Cup, before they get back to their league programme on Tuesday evening against fellow high-flyers Chichester.
