Double winning weekend for Thunder

WORTHING Thunder opened up a four point lead in the defence of their English Basketball League championship title.

They managed to maintain their unbeaten record this season against London Capitals, now difficult opponents, and Thunder made their first visit this season to Willesden a winning one, 84-74 on Saturday.

Worthing led from late in the first quarter but were pulled back to only three points ahead with three minutes left. They then came out of a time-out on a 9-0 streak. Alfredo Ott had 20 points for Thunder and Marcus Avant 17 while ex-Worhting forward Damian Harris had his most productive game against them this season with 12 points and 10 rebounds, the only double double of the game.

Then on Sunday, Thunder defeated by 114-97 the lowly King Lynn Fury, for whom Worthing's forward earlier this season, Hank Rivers, scored 44 points and pulled down 21 rebounds on his return to the Thunderdome. That inspiration left Thunder 24-18 down until Rivers' replacement, Avant, moved to 14 points in helping Worthing take the opening quarter 30-26.

Fury were still only four points down by the interval which brought the response of a 24-1 start by Worthing to the second half and they led by 29 until a 17-0 retort by Fury kept them on their toes. Centre Pat Bates notched 33 points and small-forward Avant 25. Rivers' fellow American, Lawrence Summers, added 30 for the Fury.

Thunder are at home to Tees Valley this Saturday, for whom league star guard EJ Harrison is back after leaving Reading Rockets at the end of last season.
