Dermot O'Leary is Goodwood's star turn

DERMOT O'LEARY takes centre stage at Goodwood tonight (Friday) '“ and even has a race named after him.

The X Factor host and Radio 2 DJ will be on the decks after racing as the racecourse looks to put on a big night of entertainment to make up for the power cut that wiped out Groove Armada’s set last Friday.

O’Leary will get the crowd dancing after a six-race card ends with the Dermot O’Leary Stakes at 9.05.

Racing begins at 6.15 with the Gordon’s Apprentice Handicap and the line-up also features a Class 3 race, the Levy Restaurants Handicap at 8pm.

There’s a declared field of six for that contest, with two entries from the Richard Hannon yard and one each from Pulborough’s Amanda Perrett, Andrew Balding, Clive Cox and William Haggas.

In-form Richard Hughes, who rode a double at last Friday’s meeting, is booked for a number of rides.

O’Leary is not the only man to have a race named in his honour tomorrow.

It’s also the 25th anniversary of Frankie Dettori’s first UK win, which was at Goodwood, so the 8.35 race has been titled the Frankie’s 25th Anniversary Maiden Stakes.

Goodwood bosses are set for another large crowd and are anxious for the evening to be a big success after last week’s let-down, caused by an overhead power cable fault at Boxgrove which blacked out the racecourse just as the staff were setting up for Groove Armada.

Our tips: 6.15 Amazing Win, 6.50 Arch Villain, 7.25 Moretta Blanche, 8.00 Freddy Q, 8.35 Riddle Master, 9.05 Muaamara.

We’ll have a report here on Friday night.
