County praised for quality of bridleways

THE British Horse Society has praised West Sussex for the quality of its bridleways. The Society's Regional Officer, Lady Akenhead, described it as the '˜lead county' in its approach to improvement work, particularly on bridleways and bridges.

The County Council has undertaken a lot of upgrading of riding routes, often working in association with local bridlepath groups, which act as watchdogs, and make recommendations for work.

A number of horse riders had written to the Society to say the improvement work had made a real difference when they were using path areas around the county.

Lady Akenhead also thanked all county council staff for their help and assistance and for everything that has been achieved during the year.

The county’s Public Rights of Way Team manages and maintains a path network of more than 4,000 km across West Sussex.

The team resurfaces a number of footpaths and bridleways each year and replaces and maintain many bridges. This year, 37 different projects were completed all in addition to the routine maintenance works, inspections and dealing with inquiries.
