BEST FLAT SEASON TO DATE

IN his fourth year of training horses on the Flat, Chiddingfold trainer Peter Winkworth is having his best season to date.

Following a purple patch in August, with three winners in succession, he sent out a tenth winner of the current Flat season when Safari Sunup won at Windsor last week.

Safari Sunup, by Catcher in the Rye is a useful two-year-old bay colt who handles soft ground well. He ran well on his first outing when he was fifth on the all-weather at Kempton and scored with Jim Crowley on board at Lingfield next time out.

The colt went on to finish second at Salisbury over seven furlongs, while his win over eight furlongs at Windsor, partnered by Stephen Carson, was never in doubt.

Princess India is another useful two-year-old, by Hawk Wing, who won at 12-1 at Lingfield and followed up with a gallant third in a race at Listowel on unsuitably firm ground.

The yard has two owner-breeder patrons- Felicity Veasey and Jenny Willment. The former's Mistress Eva won first time out at 40-1 and her other produce, The Willowy Wigeon, The Cool Sandpiper and Mandarinka have been knocking on the door and should win.

Jenny Willment is doing equally well with Pragmatist winning at 66-1 and 10-1. with her half-sister Shy coming in third at Kempton last week at 50-1.
