The Northiam-based shooting great became the oldest ever winner at 49 and completes an unprecedented grand slam with him holding the World and European Championships in not only Sporting but also Compak, which it is hoped will feature at some stage as an Olympic discipline.

More than 900 shooters from over 30 nations descended on the Spanish capital last weekend and were greeted by searing heat with temperatures topping 40 degrees.

Digweed hit all 50 targets on day one, followed by 48/50 and 49/50 over the next two days, putting him at the top of the leaderboard after day three with two of France’s top shots just behind him.

He put in a performance of his usual standard with 25/25 on the first round and 22/25 on arguably the hardest layout of the entire course, giving him a total score of 194/200. Brad Kidd, of the United States, finished second on 193 and French shooter Bastien Havart was third with 192.

Digweed wrote on Twitter shortly after his victory: “Can’t quite get my head round it at present!”
