Adur lose in last four

ADUR Indoor Bowling Club's Denny Plate adventure came to an end in the semi-finals against a strong Leicester side at Potters on Saturday.

Adur lost 103-60 but were disappointed with the standard of the rink surface which is set on concrete, next to a restaurant and children are allowed to play on it.

Leicester, who have a membership double the size of Adur, adapted to the conditions better than Adur and won all four rinks.

Pat Flood's team of Dave Cornwell, Roy Bainbridge and Bill Barnett got off to an excellent start and led 10-3 after five ends. However, it was level at 13-13 by 10 ends, 19-17 to Leicester after 15 and became a final score of 25-23 against Adur.

That was the closest of all the rinks. David Hubbard's rink of Geoff Arnold, Mike Patching and Phil Hillsden led 9-7 after 10 ends but went down 21-14.

The quartet of Leigh Price, Ken Holden, Dave Swainston and Gerry Bridger also led after 10 ends, 11-10 before picking up just one more point in a 27-12 defeat.

The four of Terry Stevens, Ken Woodcock, Brian Gillam and Ben Harwood trailed from the off and suffered a 24-12 reverse.

In the other semi-final, Peterborough defeated Hull 109-55 before lifting the trophy on Sunday with a 77-57 victory over Leicester.

Adur club captain Ron Smart said: 'Leicester were a good side and adapted to the rink better than us. We started with a bang on Pat Flood's rink but Leicester gradually got in front on all four rinks.

'We all had a smashing time. There were 34 of us staying in a hotel in Great Yarmouth, which was a 15-minute drive from Potters, and we all bonded well.'

Also on Saturday, John Godfrey was in the National Champion of Champions finals at Gunton Hall. He defeated Graham Shadwell 21-18 in the last 16 before losing to eventual runner-up, Neil Smith, 21-20 in the quarter-finals.

The Denny Cup was won by Egham, who defeated Exonia 76-72 in the final.

Adur, who have already won the Sussex League, will next play White Knights for a place in the Denny Memorial quarter-finals on March 31.
