Action committee to improve sport

A SIX-MAN action committee has been established in a bid to lift senior sport out of its present slump in Bexhill.

The panel comprising Scott Woodroffe (Sidley cricket captain), Steve Phillimore (Bexhill cricket captain), Guy Montgomery (Sidley cricketer), Mick Waghorn (Bexhill Cricket Club), Mick Matthews (Bexhill United) and Gerald Matthews (Bexhill Rowing Club) was formed during the sport reform meeting at the ATHA Showbar on Tuesday night.

The next step along an inevitably long and complex road to a hopefully brighter future will take the form of a meeting with Rother District Council at some point in the new year.

Dave Harris, who called and co-ordinated the discussion, said: "The only way we are going to do anything in this town is if we get a committee to make sure we are a power that is not going to be brushed aside. We will give it our best shot and try and rock a few boats. It's the future generations that we are having this meeting for."

The general consensus among the party was that council and business involvement in Bexhill sport is inadequate and that facilities need to be improved in order to attract better quality players although the possibility of a merger between the two football clubs was quickly denounced.
