50/1 shot helps bring curtain down on Fontwell’s season

The racecourse gets a rest from racing now until August 14, when it swings back into action with its Ladies’ Evening.

The card proved a great one for the bookies and a difficult one on which to find a winner.

Winning odds of 50/1, 20/1, 16/1 and 14/1 tell their own story.

The 50/1 triumph came in the Matthew Brown Memorial Westend Racing Southampton Novices’ Hurdle, won by Hazzaat, ridden by Trevor Whelan and trained by Neil King. The four-year-old took it by half a length from Nathans Pride.

Passing the post at 20/1 was the Caroline Keevil-trained Cinevator in the Whitey Two Step - New Ocasan EP Handicap Hurdle.

The 16/1 shot to come in first was Denis O’Regan’s mount Overclear in the Shoreham Port Handicap Chase.

And not far behind in the long-odds stakes was 14/1 chance Righteous Glory, ridden by Kevin Jones for Seamus Mullins, in the Jan And Cindy’s Love For Fontwell Handicap Chase.

There was just one win for runners tipped by sports editor Steve Bone – that in the Alan Arnell Memorial Handicap Chase (for the Alan Arnell Trophy), won by Nodform Richard, a Donald McCain-handled 9/2 contender with Sam Twiston-Davies on board.

The zincnet.com For Results Novices’ Handicap Hurdle was the only race to go to the favourite – Another Brandy winning under Michael Byrne. The last race of the afternoon, the 8 Wealth Management Ltd Handicap Hurdle, was claimed by 5/1 shot Nether Stream (David Dennis/Jake Hodson).

It’s been a successful first half of 2014 for Fontwell – now they’ll be hoping to build on that when their programme resumes in late summer.
