You face fine for putting trash out early in Bognor Regis

Residents around Bognor Regis who put out their bin bags too early face being fined.

The action is being threatened by Arun District Council as part of a campaign against fly-tipping. The penalty of up to 1,000 will apply to repeat offenders.

Householders who leave their refuse on the kerbside long before their weekly collection date will initially find 'wrong place, wrong time' stickers on their bags, with details of the correct time they should put their waste out.

Those who persist will be issued with a fixed penalty notice. This carries a 60 fine if it is paid within ten days and 100 for later payment. Refusal to pay will see the individual taken to court where the maximum fine is 1,000.

Putting refuse out well in advance is seen by the council as adding to the problem of waste being illegally dumped.

There are a number of ways that people can help beat the fly-tippers, and councillors are hoping residents will do their bit to prevent rubbish being dumped around the district.

Cllr Paul Wotherspoon, in charge of Arun's refuse services, said: "Fly-tipping is a serious crime and we will do everything we can to stop unscrupulous people ruining our beautiful district. Not only is it an eyesore, it can be dangerous to wildlife and can be a risk to human health.

"We all have a duty of care to ensure that any waste from our homes is disposed of in a responsible way by reputable people. So, whether you are ripping out the kitchen or simply disposing of a fridge it is vital to make sure that your builder is registered."

Fly-tipping can vary in size from bin bags to bikes, beds and building material.

Those employing someone to dispose of waste face a fine of 5,000 if they use someone who is not a registered fly tips the items. Legitimate waste carriers are registered with the Environment Agency and carry documents confirming this.

Anyone who sees fly-tipping take place is advised to call to the council on 01903 737754 or email.
