Worthing residents criticise Roffey Homes development

Neighbours in Brunswick Road say their road has been taken over by contractors working on the Roffey Homes Beach Residences redevelopment.

Resident James Hancock said: “It’s like walking out of your front door and into a building site. My complaints began with the notification Roffey had been granted permission to suspend a whole swathe of bays, almost half the street. One key issue has been the sheer volume of contractors on the street throughout the day.”

Ray Barnett also lives in Brunswick Road. He said residents had been given parking tickets while trying to park outside their homes.

“Parking has been absolutely horrendous,” said Ray.

“It’s just disturbing the whole neighbourhood. This is normally a quiet road but it’s busy and noisy now.”

Sally Carvey said: “I had to complain about strip lights left on for three nights opposite our bedroom window, an engine was left running for about an hour and workers are building on a Saturday and Sunday, too.”

Jemma Wood added: “I have lived in Brunswick Road for two years and I am fed up of this development.

“I have come home hundreds of times and had nowhere to park, and had my car blocked in by lorries.”

However managing director of Roffey Homes Ben Cheal said residents were ‘being unfair’.

He said: “The new Premier Inn Hotel at the Beach development, the first new hotel in Worthing for over 100 years, is handed over to Premier Inn by us this week.

“As we leave the site, it is inevitable there shall be increased activity.

“Temporary hoarding will be removed this week.

“We had permission to use parking along the south side for our units and skips.

“For nearly all of the development, these were hidden away within the building to minimise effects on neighbours.

“We were signed up to the Considerate Contractor scheme and won a bronze award for this development.”

Heene ward councillor Diane Guest said she ‘sympathised’ with residents.

“But I believe Roffey Homes have worked with them,” said councillor Guest.

“It is a town centre road so parking is always going to be an issue. There is no magic answer.”
