Woman arrested on suspicion of theft from Lewes food bank

On February 11, it was reported that money was missing from the De Montfort Food Bank bank account, which was open for donations and administration.

A 59-year-old woman from Lewes has been arrested on suspicion of theft and has been bailed until May 1 while investigations continue.

A spokesperson from the De Montford Food Bank said: “Concerns arose when we got the account book and noticed some discrepancies.

“We took the accounts to the bank and to the fraud department at Lewes District Council the very next day, and they advised us to go to the police. We took the evidence to the police immediately and an arrest was made.

“This incident is completely unrelated to any of the other food banks in Lewes.”

The De Montfort Food Bank is keen to reassure its clients that operations are still running as normal.

The spokesperson added: “Our clients are being very well served. We have a group of people working closely together to make sure they receive everything they are entitled to and that we do as much for them as we can.

“If anything, because of this, we are working even better as there is much more communication.”
