Terrible beauty: Local resident Bill Doherty will be giving a talk at this month's Literary Society meeting next Friday March 18th. The talk is entitled '˜A Terrible Beauty is Born? Dublin 1916' and will refer to Irish writers during this period. During that time on April 24th 1916 the Easter Rising broke out in Dublin which involved Irish nationalists staging a rebellion against the British government in Ireland and led, in 1922, to the establishment of the Irish Free State. This action was in response to the Act of Union in 1800 when Ireland became part of the UK. As a result of this union Ireland lost its parliament in Dublin and was governed by a united parliament from London. The centenary of the Easter Rising is in 5 weeks time. Members and non-members are invited to meet as usual at 7 for 7.30pm in the Court Hall and there will be light refreshments on arrival.

History talk: On Thursday March 17th the Rye and District National Trust Association has arranged a talk by Richard Eales on Magna Carta and its Consequences: England, Kent and Sussex at the end of the Reign of King John. The talk will be held in the Brede Village Hall at 2pm and entry cost is £3 for members or £4 non-members and includes refreshments after the talk. Richard Eales is a former Head of History at the University of Kent and a leading Medieval Historian specialising in the 11th, 12th and 13th Centuries.

Museum volunteers: Winchelsea Museum based in the Upper Court Hall re-opens on Sunday May 1st until September 30th and volunteers are needed to be in charge during opening hours from 10.30am till 4.30pm. A letter has been posted to every household in the town with the contact number which is 01797 226642 and if you are able to help please phone soon.

IPC meeting: Icklesham Parish Council next meets on Monday March 14th in the Community Hall commencing at 7.15pm. Matters being followed up concern the mowing of grass at Harbour Field without the Council’s consent which could result in permission to use the recreation ground being withdrawn. Also after liaison with Rother District Council over three issues: the Rye Harbour car park and toilets lease wherein the income from the car park can be shared; the possibility of handing back the facilities during the lease and the idea of devolving the other public conveniences in the parish; the recommendation at the meeting will be to proceed with the signing of the lease.

Veteran walk: A Sponsored Walk for War Veterans takes place throughout the day on Sunday March 20th at Rye Harbour. The walk is in aid of the charities Combat Stress and Walking with the Wounded and if you would like to participate do come along and dogs are also welcome. Combat Stress or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder was referred to as ‘shell shock’ in the First World War and the symptoms are intense anxiety, panic, looking out for signs of danger and being ‘on patrol’ all the time. Free car parking, first aid and public loos will be available in the village as well as refreshments. Also during the day there will be collection buckets for donations and charity merchandise on sale.
