WILLIAMSON'S WEEKLY NATURE NOTES

I WENT all the way to Canada to see the fall (among other things) but the maples were better back here at home.

What? I hear you say. That's not a maple in your picture. Jolly well is.

A field maple, and growing 200 yards from my home here in West Dean woods. These natives are different from canadian maples. Their leaves are much smaller.

Field maples grow all over Sussex. They are very common. They are often found in hedgerows and sometimes they are allowed to grow into tallish trees.

Then they show off their wonderful bright yellow or orange leaves to perfection. Field maples stand out a mile when their leaves have fallen too.
