West Meads veterinary nurse cares for deer fawn

Meet Freddie the young patient at a West Meads vets.

The male roe deer fawn is being hand-reared by veterinary nurse Charlie Sampson at AlphaPet Veterinary Clinic to aid his recovery.

She said: “He is living with me so he can be fed through the night.

“He is starting to suckle better now, taking in more milk each feed.

“He is still not out of the woods yet and we are taking it day by day.”

Freddie, aged five to ten days, was found collapsed crying for his mother.

It is unclear why he was abandoned.

He arrived at the clinic in The Precinct on Thursday, June 9.

He was transferred from Arun Vets in Pulborough where he had received first aid the previous night.

But he was still in a critical state.

Charlie said he had a low temperature and low blood glucose.

His blood sugar level was dangerously low.

He was on intravenous fluids and two hourly milk feeds.
