Walkers angry at plans to replace rare footbridge

A VALUABLE part of the South Down's heritage looks likely to be lost forever with plans to demolish a suspension footbridge near Amberley and Arundel.

The bridge crossed the original, now cut off, course of the River Arun and links North and South Stoke.

It will be replaced by the county council with a modern type bridge after an oak tree fell on it in March, causing extensive damage. Work is expected to begin next summer.

The budget for the new bridge is 50,000 whereas to replace the suspension footbridge would have cost more than 100,000.
