Van owners warned of rise in thefts in Bognor Regis in winter

Van owners around Bognor Regis have been urged to ensure that Christmas does not come early for thieves.

The dark nights have already seen the traditional rise in thefts of tools from the vehicles take place.

Sussex Police is warning owners to be aware of the threat to their property.

Sgt Danny West, of Bognor police station, said a little extra care would enable owners to reduce their risk of becoming a victim of that type of crime.

"Ideally, all tools should be removed when the vehicle is parked up for the night," he said. "If this is not possible, then consider reversing the van so that it is parked immediately against an immovable object such as a wall or garage door making access into the area where the tools are stored much more difficult."

Other crime prevention tips include security cages and vehicle alarms. Recording serial numbers of tools makes later identification by the police considerably easier, adds Sgt West, and could be the difference between a successful prosecution or the thief being allowed to keep the stolen property.

More crime prevention advice is available on the Sussex Police website.
