Organisers were excited to reveal this morning that £2,000 was raised to give away, £1,000 going to Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice and the rest going to local groups that supported the event.

Stuart Lanham, one of the organisers, explained: “Shoreham Bonfire Society, who organised the community run and community funded beach bonfire and fireworks night on Shoreham Beach, have also been able to support several local Shoreham community groups, with sizeable donations including Shoreham Beach Bateria Samba Band, 3rd Shoreham Sea Scouts, the young musicians of Shoreham Allstars, Shoreham Fort and the Church of the Good Shepherd.”

The bonfire was built on the beach on Saturday morning during stormy weather but by the evening, the weather had cleared and a big crowd turned out to see the samba procession, bonfire, fireworks and the young musicians from Shoreham Allstars.

Jonathan Marshall, society chairman, said: “We are so glad that so many people came along and helped create such a wonderful family atmosphere.

“The night’s success is thanks to our many volunteers who give up their free time to pull it all together, even when the Sussex weather isn’t at its finest.

“We were also delighted that those who came along gave generously to our donation collectors, the excellent 3rd Shoreham Sea Scouts and volunteers, so that not only could we pay for the event but also raise money for Chestnut Tree House and support some excellent local Shoreham community groups.

“We look forward to seeing everyone on November 12.”
