UPDATE: Car catches fire after ditch crash in Battle

A man was airlifted to hospital after their car caught fire when it crashed into a ditch in Battle this afternoon (Monday, October 3).

Emergency services, including three fire engines were called to Harrier Lane at its junction with Marley Lane after the incident at 2.30pm.

A passenger was able to get out but the driver was trapped and reported to be unconscious.

Members of the public formed a chain with buckets to put out the fire, along with firefighters sing one hose reel jet and 1-in-7 foam, before they were able to rescue the casualty who had suffered multiple injuries.

He was flown by air ambulance to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, for treatment.

The Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) team was mobilised to the incident and crews made the area safe for members of the public.

The incident resulted in traffic disruption and children awaiting collection from Battle and Langton Primary School were delayed.
