Udimore village voice - April 6

As she emerged from her drive on her way to the Palm Sunday service, a Udimore resident’s car was hit by a motorcyclist. Although her car was severely damaged, mercifully the resident escaped serious injury, and it seems that the motorcyclist suffered nothing worse than a fractured collar bone and ribs. For several years now, fine weekends in spring and summer have attracted so many bikers onto our main road, many of them showing no respect at all for the 40mph speed limit, that a serious accident seemed sure to happen one day. It’s extremely fortunate that on the day it did happen it wasn’t worse, a salutary warning however to everyone concerned to work together to prevent a recurrence, by making our road safer for all who use it.

Liz Turgoose has told me that the series of four lent lunches in Brede and Udimore raised the excellent total sum of £430 for the four charities supported by the Overseas Missionary Group: Sight Savers, Deaf in Tanzania, Papua New Guinea Church Partnership and Homes of Mercy Bethany.

The work of the mission in Papua New Guinea will be the subject of a talk by Louise Ewington at the group’s Spring Lunch in St Mary’s Community Hall, on Thursday May 10, at 12.30pm, when there will also be a raffle. Tickets for the two-course meal are very reasonably priced at £10 and are available from Liz Turgoose (01424 882657) or Judy Edwards (01424 882222).

Today there will be a service of hymns, prayers and meditation for Good Friday, in St Mary’s.

The Easter Sunday service in St Mary’s will be a Sung Eucharist at 11.15am.

I should like to wish all readers of this column a very happy Easter, free from accidents of every kind.
