Tributes to Steyning man whose legacy will continue to grow

A GREEN-FINGERED project has been given a boost by the news youngsters can continue using an allotment plot for as long as they want.

Pupils from Steyning Grammar School began using the plot, at the Rublees Allotments, in Steyning, while allotment-holder Graham Price recovered from knee surgery.

Mr Price planned to return to the plot when he was able, but died suddenly last month (November), aged 67.

His widow, Anita, said she wanted the Steyning Grammar pupils to continue growing vegetables at the plot.

She told the Herald: "He gave his allotment to the grammar school and he was going to take it back when he was better.

"Unfortunately, he didn't get better.

"He loved the Downs and he loved his allotment.

"He was over at the allotment so much we had the garden patioed so he could spend more time at the allotment.

"He made so many friends there.

"He knew more people in Steyning than I do, because of the allotment."

Mrs Price said she would like the allotment back if and when the school and pupils decide they no longer want to work at it.

"But while they would like to do it," she added, "I will pay their yearly subscription.

"They absolutely love it.

"He was so happy that they had taken it over."

Valleys

Mrs Price said her husband, a Welshman, had loved to spend time at the allotments, with their view of the Downs.

"While he was at the allotment, he said it was like being back in the Valleys.

"It is a very Welsh thing to have an allotment," she added.

"If you were from the Valleys and you grew your own vegetables, you were somebody.

"It was lovely, he loved it."

Allotments

Shelley Marks-Thomson, chairman of the Steyning Allotments Association, said: "He was a lovely man.

"He just always had a smile and he was a really nice man.

"He loved the allotments like so many of us do."
